You have obviously underwent a lot of struggles and changes in yourself to get to the position that you are in now. And this is where most people fail to wear off the effects of the hard-earned victory soon enough get back into the original mindset, the shape and form of the thirsty teenager who had a defining purpose.
You continuously plummet back into your moments of success, and let that alter the way you take on the world — and often with newfound perspectives of egotism. If you find yourself stuck on a project with a very unreasonable deadline, you strong-arm your peers and employees to get it done — instead of empowering them, or making things right at your end.
It is surprisingly the opposite. When you attain a certain position in life — after having climbed a few ladders — you will have your own expectations to fulfill, standards to live by, qualities to adapt, cars to buy, wife to satisfy, babies to give birth to, and then, maybe, even more ladders to climb. Things that mattered to you before lose their importance now, and little things that you assume are characteristic of successful people find a major part in the way you radiate emotional qualities.
And one particular mindset you come to have without having any of its conflicting effects outreaching to you is that you can never, ever, climb down — not even figuratively. This affects the relationship with your employees, particularly when they can bring different opinions to the table that far outweigh yours in reasoning and potential. One thing that can seriously do damage to you as a leader is losing your authority to someone who is not even half as qualified as you are, but is capable of seriously and effortlessly pulling strings, coming up with ideas you never thought of before, and solutions that took you days in coming to.
And you end up failing in one of the most important works of a leader — to sort out the valuable assets who not only offer their efforts in getting projects done with twice the usual efficiency, but find ways they can improve the company as a whole.
When something bad happens to you or the company, you make it a point to disregard your inefficacy for the lot of emotional impacts you had to stand through, and the sacrifices you had to make.
Part of being a leader demands that you make sacrifices. And a bad day can get much worse for an employee if he has to constantly worry about the kind of reaction he will get from his leader for everything that he does.
